What Is Alexandrite?
Alexandrite is a rare gem variety of the mineral chrysoberyl — beryllium aluminium oxide (BeAl₂O₄) — distinguished by an extraordinary optical phenomenon: it changes colour depending on the light source. In daylight or under fluorescent lighting, a fine alexandrite appears vivid bluish-green to green. Move the same stone into incandescent light — a traditional light bulb, a candle, or firelight — and it transforms into a rich purplish-red or raspberry red. Move it back to daylight and it returns to green.
This dramatic transformation, known as the alexandrite effect, is caused by trace amounts of chromium replacing aluminium in the crystal lattice. The exact concentration and crystal environment required to produce a strong colour change is so specific that fine alexandrite occurs in only a handful of locations worldwide — and even at those sites, only a tiny fraction of chrysoberyl production shows the effect strongly enough to qualify as true alexandrite.
With a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, alexandrite is exceptionally durable — harder than emerald, topaz, or quartz, and only slightly softer than sapphire and ruby. The Alexandrite Effect
The colour-change phenomenon in alexandrite is one of the most fascinating optical effects in the mineral kingdom, and understanding it helps explain both why the stone is so rare and why the strength of the change is the primary quality factor.
The physics: Alexandrite's absorption spectrum has two transmission windows — one in the blue-green portion of the visible spectrum around 500 nm, and another in the red portion around 680 nm. Between them, the stone strongly absorbs yellow light. When the stone is illuminated by daylight (a broad spectrum with plenty of blue and green), the green window dominates and the stone appears green. When illuminated by incandescent light (which is heavily weighted toward red wavelengths), the red window dominates and the stone appears red. The same stone, the same eye — only the light has changed.
Why it's so rare: Producing this exact absorption pattern requires chromium in a very specific concentration (typically 0.1–0.4% Cr) substituting for aluminium in a very specific crystal environment. Too little chromium and there is no colour change; too much and the stone becomes uniformly greenish or reddish; the wrong crystal chemistry and the effect fails entirely. It is a geological accident that occurs in only a handful of locations worldwide.
Strength of change: Not all alexandrites change colour equally strongly. Gemological laboratories rate the change on a scale, typically:
- Vivid change (100%): the ideal — a dramatic shift from pure green to pure red. Only the finest historical Russian and Brazilian stones consistently achieve this, and even among Ceylon material such stones are extraordinarily rare.
- Strong change (60–80%): a clear, obvious change from bluish-green or green to purplish-red or red. This is the level at which stones command true alexandrite prices.

How to evaluate colour change: Always view an alexandrite under two contrasting light sources — natural daylight (or a proper daylight-balanced lamp at around 5500K) and a warm incandescent bulb or candle (around 2700K). LED lighting is unreliable for evaluation because the spectral output varies widely between bulbs. Never assess an alexandrite under a single light source.
History & Discovery
Alexandrite is a relatively young gemstone in the historical record, having been discovered only in 1830 in the emerald mines of the Tokovaya region of the Ural Mountains in Russia. According to the traditional account, a miner named Nikolai Kokovin found the first crystals while working an emerald deposit. Recognizing that the material was not emerald despite its green colour, he sent samples to the mineralogist Nils Gustaf Nordenskiöld in Helsinki for identification.
Nordenskiöld initially misidentified the material as emerald, but on later examination — reportedly by candlelight — he witnessed the astonishing colour change and realized he was looking at an entirely new variety of chrysoberyl. He originally named the mineral “diaphanite,” but by the time the discovery was formally published, the name had been changed to “alexandrite” in honour of the young Alexander Nikolaevich, heir to the Russian throne, who came of age at 16 in 1834. Alexander later ruled as Czar Alexander II from 1855 until his assassination in 1881.
The naming turned out to be prophetic: alexandrite's red and green colours matched exactly the military colours of Imperial Russia, and the stone was quickly adopted as a national gem. It became particularly fashionable in Russian aristocratic jewellery in the late 19th century, and legends grew around the belief that alexandrite brought good luck to those born under its influence.
The original Russian deposits produced spectacular stones but were relatively small and were largely worked out by the early 20th century. Between the exhaustion of Ural mining and the political upheaval of the Russian Revolution, alexandrite became extremely scarce in the international market for several decades. It was not until the discovery of major deposits in Brazil (Hematita, 1987) and the recognition of Sri Lankan chrysoberyl material as producing fine alexandrite that supply resumed at commercial levels.
Where Are Alexandrites Found?
Alexandrite is one of the rarest gems in the world, and only a handful of geological locations have ever produced meaningful quantities. The principal historical and current sources are:
- Russia (Ural Mountains) — the original source, discovered 1830. Ural alexandrites are the historical benchmark: they typically show a pure bluish-green to purplish-red change, with the finest exhibiting near-perfect colour transformation. However, stones rarely exceeded 2 carats, and the deposits are largely depleted. Only occasional artisanal production continues today, and genuine Ural alexandrites appear at auction mainly as antique jewellery pieces.
- Sri Lanka (Ceylon) — the most important current source for commercial-size alexandrites. Sri Lankan material tends to be larger and cleaner than Russian, though the colour change often shows more of a greenish-to-brownish shift than the pure green-to-red of the best Ural stones. - Brazil (Hematita, Minas Gerais) — a discovery in 1987 in the Hematita mine produced some of the finest alexandrites ever seen, rivalling and in some cases surpassing Russian material. Even combining all of these sources, world annual production of fine alexandrite above 1 carat with strong colour change is measured in dozens or hundreds of stones, not thousands. This is the geological foundation of alexandrite's extraordinary value.
Sri Lanka's Alexandrites
Sri Lanka has been producing alexandrite from its alluvial gem gravels for well over a century. Although the island is not the historical “home” of alexandrite in the way it is for sapphire, it has become the world's most important current source of fine alexandrite in commercial sizes — a role that has grown as the Russian and Brazilian deposits have been exhausted.
Geological setting: Sri Lankan alexandrite is found in the same alluvial gem gravels (locally called illam) that produce the island's sapphires, rubies, spinels, and other gemstones. These gravels are the eroded remains of ancient metamorphic and pegmatitic rocks in Sri Lanka's Highland Complex, which contain the beryllium, aluminium, and chromium in the right proportions to form chrysoberyl with colour-change properties. Because the stones have been transported and reworked by rivers over millions of years, well-formed rough crystals are relatively rare — most Sri Lankan alexandrite arrives as worn pebbles.
Mining regions: The most productive areas for alexandrite in Sri Lanka are Ratnapura, Elahera, Kolonne, and Okkampitiya. Mining is almost entirely artisanal — small teams digging pit mines through gem-bearing gravels and washing the concentrate by hand in traditional baskets. The rarity of alexandrite means that a productive mine might yield only a handful of alexandrite stones per year alongside thousands of sapphires and other gems.
Character of Ceylon alexandrites: Sri Lankan alexandrites are typically distinguished by:
- Larger sizes. Ceylon consistently produces alexandrite in the 2–10 carat range, with occasional exceptional stones above 20 carats — sizes almost unheard of from other sources.
- Better clarity. Sri Lankan material tends to have fewer internal inclusions than Russian or Brazilian material of equivalent size.
- A slightly different colour palette. Ceylon stones often show a green with more yellow-green character in daylight (rather than the bluish-green of top Russian material) and a purplish-red to reddish-brown in incandescent light. The finest Ceylon stones do achieve pure green-to-red change, but this is rarer.

Market position: Ceylon alexandrites of top quality can rival Russian stones in beauty while offering the advantage of larger, cleaner material. Colour Change — The Defining Factor
In alexandrite, the strength and quality of the colour change is unequivocally the most important quality factor. A stone with weak or moderate colour change is a curiosity; a stone with strong or vivid change is a treasure. This single characteristic can create a 20× price difference between two stones of otherwise identical size and clarity.
The ideal colour change is dramatic and pure — bluish-green to pure green in daylight, transforming to raspberry red or purplish-red in incandescent light. The colours themselves should be saturated and vivid, not washed out. Brown or grey undertones in either the green or the red phase reduce value substantially. The transition should be immediate and unmistakable, not something you have to search for.
Colour Purity
Beyond the strength of the change, the purity of the individual colours matters greatly. In daylight, the ideal is a vivid green with a touch of blue (bluish-green) — Ural stones are famed for this hue. Stones that lean yellowish-green or brownish-green are less prized. Cut
Alexandrite is challenging to cut because it is strongly pleochroic — the colour changes not only with the light source but also with the viewing angle relative to the crystal axes. A skilled cutter orients the rough to maximize colour intensity face-up and to balance the daylight and incandescent colours. Oval and cushion cuts are most common; step cuts are also used to accentuate colour. Well-cut alexandrites are relatively symmetric with balanced proportions and no strong window (see-through zone in the centre).
Carat Weight
Alexandrite becomes exponentially rarer above 1 carat, and stones above 3 carats with strong colour change are museum-quality. A fine 3-carat alexandrite might cost five to eight times as much per carat as a fine 1-carat stone of equivalent quality. Stones above 5 carats with dramatic colour change are among the rarest coloured gemstones on Earth, with individual specimens commanding prices in the millions.
Treatments (or Lack Thereof)
Alexandrite occupies an unusual position in the coloured gemstone market: it is one of the very few high-value gems that is essentially never treated. There are several reasons:
- No effective treatment exists. Unlike sapphire (heat), ruby (heat, lead-glass filling), or emerald (oil), there is no known treatment that reliably enhances the colour change of alexandrite. The optical phenomenon depends on the natural crystal chemistry, which cannot be modified by heat or chemistry.
- Fracture filling is impractical. Alexandrite is durable enough and typically clean enough that fracture filling (common in emerald) is neither necessary nor useful.
- Coating and diffusion don't work. Attempts to enhance alexandrite's appearance through surface coating or lattice diffusion have not produced marketable results.
This means the alexandrite you buy is essentially guaranteed to be natural and untreated (assuming it is not synthetic — see below). This greatly simplifies buying decisions compared to sapphires or rubies. However, it also means that a poor-quality alexandrite cannot be improved after mining — the stone you see is the stone that came out of the ground.
Synthetic alexandrite: The main concern in the alexandrite market is not treatment but synthesis. Lab-created alexandrite has been produced commercially since the 1970s using flux-growth and Czochralski pulled-crystal methods. Synthetic stones can show excellent colour change and are chemically identical to natural alexandrite, but they have negligible rarity value and are worth 1–5% of natural stones of equivalent size and appearance. Distinguishing natural from synthetic requires expert gemological analysis — always insist on certification from GIA, GRS, Gübelin, or SSEF for any alexandrite valued above US$5,000.

Cat's eye alexandrites are an even more specialized collector niche. Avoid stones with weak colour change regardless of size, as these will always trade at a substantial discount to true colour-change material.

- The Sauer Alexandrite (122 carats) — the largest known faceted alexandrite in the world, cut from a spectacular 190-carat rough discovered in the Hematita mine in Brazil in 1967.
